Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
For this project I had to illustrate a book cover. The book I chose was Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I illustrated the main character, Professor Pierre Aronnax, as he is underwater in a diver suit. I use a palette of greys to make the matte rubber and warm browns and yellows for the shiny copper of the suit, which stand out against the green blue gradient of the background. The bubbles, rays of light, and wave pattern give the composition a sense of motion and depth. The wave pattern continues onto the type which creates a relationship with the illustration.
